First Steps is turning 3?! Where does the time go? Gabe and Sean are joined by our favorite Texan, Mycah Brandley, to talk through where emo meets oil, Taco Bell pastels, and prosciutto posters. Plus: Gabe’s Gauntlet and Design Student Confessions!
You can find Mycah Brandley on Instagram as @_imagine.nation for his design and @mycahdevin.pdf for his memes. You can also watch Mycah’s Rodeo Roundtable series, which unpacks a little bit more about the class that birthed this project and many others, on the Rodeo Instagram, as @psugdrodeo.
You can find about Gabe Bidney as @gabe_bidney on Instagram, or as Gabriel Bidney on LinkedIn. Gabe leads PSUGD Design Club, which you can find about on Instagram as @psudesignclub.
Show art by Joel Williams. Music by Nica Mork, with additional compositions by Albert Marlowe/S.I. Publishing and others (licensed through Pond5). Production support by Mycah Brandley.
Did I Do That?: First Steps is produced with students from DES 425 Rodeo, part of the Portland State University Graphic Design program. To learn more about PSUGD, visit psu.gd. You can learn more about Rodeo, the class this project was borne from, at psu.gd/rodeo or @psugdrodeo.
UPCOMING EVENTS
Thanks for all who came out to Future Fonts & Friends last week. THIS WEEK, though, as this episode drops, we’ve got even more good stuff coming!
Did I Do That? is back at Seattle Design Festival!
Saturday, August 16 at 1pm
Seattle Design Festival Mainstage at Lake Union Park
Free
What’s the worst project you’ve ever made—the one you almost cringe to think about sharing with the world? It’s a feeling every designer can identity. But what if you had a chance to fish it out of the proverbial trash can and pit it toe-to-toe against some of your peers’ worst-ever work, with the hope of having it named “Worst in Show?”
Did I Do That? Scrapes the Bottom of the Barrel shares the Seattle design community's that shame with the world, with a panel of Seattle’s best graphic designers will talk through their most hilariously regrettable projects live on stage with me. We'll talk it through, then decide together whose project really is the bottom of the barrel. It’s a funny, irreverent chance to unpack the fear of feedback while celebrating something that rarely gets the spotlight—the messy work you have to make to get to someplace better.
Be there SATURDAY SATURDAY SATURDAY!
But wait…
There is still more yet to be announced, so keep your eyes peeled on the Substack or Instagram for more updates.
If you haven’t paid the website a visit in a while, now might be a good time! I just slapped a fresh coat of paint on it for what I’d call “stage one” of a refresh to match with our new season 7 show art. While I’d love to get in deep with it and finally clean up some of the more persistent bugs, I’m in the process of moving and planning for a busy late summer/early fall. Some things need to take time, even if you don’t have the time for them.
